Education Policy

Prior to 1977 Nigeria operated an educational policy inherited from Britain at Independence. The inability of this policy to satisfy the national aspirations of the country made it unpopular.

The National Policy on Education is anchored on Nigeria's philosophy on Education as enunciated through the nation's objectives. Nigeria has five main national objectives as provided by the Second National Development Plan and accepted as the necessary foundation for the National Policy on Education. they are the building of:

- a free and democratic society

- a just and egalitarian society

- a united strong and self-reliant nation

- a great and dynamic economy

- a land of bright and full opportunities for all citizens (FRN, 1998).

There is the Universal Basic Education Policy and the Secondary Education Policy

Government's priorities on Ed

South Africa’s constitution encompasses the rights of people with disabilities. The Education White Paper 6 (Department of Education, 2001:10) outlined the government’s policies for a single, undivided education   all learners, including those with disabilities, in the hopes that inclusive education would provide “…a cornerstone of an integrated and caring society”. This White Paper was designed to transform the South African educational system by building an integrated system for all learners (i.e. no special and ordinary schools); using a curriculum that is more flexible and suitable to the needs and abilities of learners; developing district-based support teams to provide systemic support for any and all teachers who need it; and strengthening the skills of teachers to cope with more diverse classes

Activity 2.2

Attitudes towards supporting change: The community, that includes parents, caregivers and educators need to form part of the initiative than only can positive awarenesses be created on issues like sexual reproductive health and a feeding scheme project can be put in place

Resources: If national and international organisations form part of the initiative that probabilities are better for success since the awareness platform is bigger and there is more money available

Policymakers need to be serious about change then only can success be guaranteed

You are right Fatima, Ibrahim has given detailed information. What suggestions would you make to policy makers if you had a chance to?
