Activity 4.3 Understanding OERs - One thing I learnt about OER

One thing I have learnt about OER is that because OERs are free resources, the quality of contents cannot be guaranteed, and so it is subject to user's discretion. That is why Educational institutions must have policies in place for the use of the contents as reference materials by both lecturers and students.

OERs are teaching and learning materials which are free and available on the internet for use by others, they include textbooks, videos, graphics, course ware material etc.

I have always been advocating for the use of OERs to my colleagues. But one thing I learnt or appreciated about OERs in this course is that te quality of the contents can not be guaranteed, hence the need to put in place institutional policies to guide the use or adoption of OERs.

Yes Bikisu agree and though OERs offer such great opportunities to enhance and enrich teaching and learning  as you have outlined they too have their limitations. I say this in reference to OERs that offer ' Lesson Plan Banks' to teachers where they are unlikely to find relevant material for their context.  With limitations considered however OERs are great to implement  with institution policies.

OERs are freely available teaching, learning and research materials that have unrestricted access but must be acknowledged when used.

I do agree with you all. The quality may not be guaranteed. However, just as the teacher uses his experience to gauge the quality of textbooks and other resources for use in teaching, he/she should use the same acumen in scrutinizing the best OERs  to suit his/her context and in line with the expected curricula requirements.
