1.5 What does the Wave model of intervention mean to you
This Wave model clearly indicates to us that Inclusive Education is seen as a graduate response in which the CHILD is the centre. These three level of intervention in this Wave model (i.e Wave 1 ,Wave 2 and Wave 3)interact and link to each other in order to decrease the exclusion of children in the teaching in the mainstream classroom regardless their learning impairment and disability. It is not about the quality of teaching of children with disabilities but inclusive quality of teaching of ALL children .This graduate response begins with the "universal offer ". What is available for all by improving teaching and learning for children. The teacher is to deliver high quality teaching to benefit all learners including children with disabilities and children with special needs. Here the classroom teacher will increase opportunity for group work or work in pairs. This allows children to share and learn from each other. A less able child learns from a more able child or less confident child build its confidence amongst their group or pair are no a shamed in a whole class discussion. Doing activities in a small group or in pairs the stronger children are able to support the weaker children .Group work fosters social inclusion and it creates feeling of belonging or acceptance in a group you do not feel isolated .Moreover it is vital to improve the use of learning aids made out of our local resources, like sea shells ,pebbles, sand ,even leaves or petals for counters in maths. We can use empty containers to teach shapes, volumes. The visually impaired learner can always orally tell their answers to their partner they are working with instead of the teacher in a whole class when the teacher is busy with other children.
The second level of intervention (i.e. Wave 2).It's known as targeted approach. This is whole school approach or partnership, when the additional support that the children need to access the universal that is in the mainstream classroom. In wave 2 or level 2 it recognises that the children (some only) need direct intervention. The support provided in Wave 2 are parallel with Wave 1 so the child has access to the mainstream quality teaching taking place in Wave 1.This support is a a basic level like providing a pair of glasses or hearing aid. But if the child is completely blind ,then partnership with NGO or specialist will be needed with braille device or sign language specialist. This level provides opportunity for the disability child to remain in the classroom and not feel excluded or else they will eventually lead the child to drop out from school. Therefore when these targeted children with disabilities are provided access, engagement to inclusive quality learning in the classroom they learn at or above the age related expectation of their peers. Having access to the correct data about the the child's disability supports the teacher with the relevant and appropriate teaching method also teaching resources to provide to the child. As in some cases it is not identified or hidden. Developing a good partnership with parents , health services, medical service and a specialist all contribute to the inclusive quality learning of the children. Creating a more friendly disabled physical environment like having a ramp for children who use a wheel chair or can't walk properly using stairs ,having rails inside the classroom or toilets or more space in the classroom for blind or visual impairment children will awareness amongst teachers and students. Also have clubs for disabilities improves their social skills ,encouraging a disable parent to join the PTA and making sure disable children join the extra curricular activities and sports all contribute to the inclusive quality learning of the child in a more cost effective manner.
Finally Wave three or level three of the Wave model focus on the specialist support for some specific complex learning disabilities and impairments. Here is when the Government and NGOs work in partnership with schools and those responsible for Inclusive and special Education needs and disability(SEND) teachers.
This Wave model allows the whole community, school community to hand in hand support provide services and assistance with each country's respective Government and NGOs with the quality Inclusive Learning of their children by supporting and helping the teachers in their respective schools accordingly to their identified needs of their children.
The 'Waves of Intervention' model (national Strategies) describes how different levels of intervention can be understood and systematically implemented.
