4.3: Understanding OER

Communities using OER is the main guarantee of quality assurance. More an OER is used, more its quality is raised high.

In my institution, the use of OERs is not encouraged. There is the traditional view of academic copyright and plagiarism issues. The concept of OER needs to be introduced and embraced.

It is the same in my context. It is difficult to promote the use of open resources from that point of view. There is a fear of losing control of the resource and becoming dispensable as an expert teacher in a certain content, or losing the reference to its authorship (although all content has multiple layers of authorship).

It is as if another teacher, having the script of the play, could teach with the same background as the experienced teacher. However, when the play is in progress it brings into play other teaching skills, the ability to make the students' learning active, to make the experience more inclusive, to arrange the learning experience in the most student-friendly way, to respond as best as possible to what happens, to ask good questions... there is much more to designing the classroom experience than having the ideal resource for that content.

It may feel very lonely for individual teachers in their classrooms and there is a need for a more objective or closer professional recognition among colleagues in sharing practice, experiences, challenges, with the aim of creating a collaborative culture of sharing educational resources, and helping us to build better resources together.

A lot of sensitization campaign on OERs need to be done Fatima to enable "others"  see the light and embrace them. Just as Julia has mentioned, there is need  to create collaborative culture and networks among teachers to share and build better educational resources together.

David, you are right. sensitization on OER works. In my country educational resources are vetted and only those authorized can be used in schools for very good reasons  but i realized that OERs could be used to make the content and objectives of the approved books achieved in a great way especially through use of the case studies. When teachers are sensitized how to do this, they embraced it and when observed, it was found to be working.

Fatima could you be the right person to introduce and cultivate a positive attitude to your institution about the OERs?

In my institution we have three (3) fledged computer rooms with 24/7 net work connectivity.  So the structures that are needed for OER are already in place.

The only way individuals in my institution can be supported is in the area of technical skills or rather knowledge of how to access OER when they they need to use them.  I would say most of them do not know how to find the needed resources in their particular subjects.  However thanks to such courses provided by Open University that try to give the knowledge to help us with our work.

The culture of the institution towards OER is encouraging.  The institution trains secondary school teachers by distance learning where such OER materials will  handy.
