Activity 3.5 Minimum criteria and Learner-centred teaching

I am a Teacher Educator. I once observed a student teacher teaching English. In Malawi, English is a second language and also an official language.

This student teacher was teaching a reading lesson. After reading a passage, it came a time when the class had to discuss the passage. Most questions asked during the discussion time were of closed type. Sitting next to me in the classroom was a learner who was tilting her head towards direction wherever the teacher made a move. I noticed that there was a problem of hearing with this learner. The student teacher made no attempt assist this learner to benefit on the teaching.

By the look of the things, this student teacher excluded many learners including the one with the hearing problem. The student teacher used closed questions instead of using open questions. The learner with hearing problem would have been made to sit on seat in front close to the teacher.

Not many Teachers are that observant. You however did not share how you handled the situation.

In as much as interupting a class is not a good approach, we usually advise a repeat of the lesson when the Teacher's attention is drawn to the lapses.

I agree with the repeat of the lesson.

Minimum Criteria

Those were good observations of an assessor. Just wondering did you take time to correct the student teacher after the lesson and what was his/her response to your comments?

3.5 Minimum criteria and Learner centered teaching

I believe that after your observation of the student teacher you needed to have sat with him to give him some pointers on how he could have use different strategy and make the lesson more interactive because clearly it seems as though he lack the know how to make the lesson effective.
