The role of the teacher is to readapt his/her teaching practise to be more inclusive since there are expected young mothers in the class or returning young mothers to the class with their young ones .
The role of the teacher is show kind words at all times. Show a positive mindset at all times so the rest of the class will value and accept everyone has a right to learn although she is pregnant or returning to the class after the birth of the child. Create ways for the rest of the class to help these young expected mothers in group or class discussion by been extra careful when they walk by them ,pass texts to them or carry their school bags for them as the months get closer .
Also its very important for the teacher to build a good partnership with the parents or whoever is raising the expected mother. Providing the parents that she is allowed to attend during pregnancy and after birth .Show that the school system cares and that the young mother has a right to attend school. Furthermore it is important that the teacher supports and provides information on medical support during the pregnancy and after. It is important to provide connections with health support to visit the expected young mothers to show care and love ,ensure all will be alright with their parents awareness.
They can also visit their homes if it is possible to see the young mother and parents .So they feel they are still loved and belong to school community. The local government and NGO should work together and give positive support by providing more awareness by visiting the schools and providing a friendly and appropriate sex and reproduction health talk separately to the girls and the boys .Even go to the community and give a simple talk on Health ,Reproduction and Education so that the whole community will change their mind set and believe that the girls should go back to school after pregnancy and that they need their parents support together with the school instead of keeping them at home.
Formulating and pronouncing policy and implementing policy are two different activities. If mechanisms to implement policy are not put in place, a very good policy would not yield the intended outcomes. Come up with policy and measures to ensure compliance at the same time including monitoring mechanisms.
Thanks Mele for highlighting the plight of pregnant and young mothers. This is an area where there is greater exclusivity of education to our girls in most countries. A girl who finds herself is such a situation is condemned by the society and doomed to be a failure. Good policies need to be put in place and implemented to give such girls a second chance.
