Feeling excluded

I felt excluded in my first year postgraduate class, when the lecturer knew all the other students by name.

While asking questions, he could.menion the student he wanted to answer the question by name...while he had difficulties with my name.

Ever time I was responding to his queries, he could remind the class that he had not grasped my name.I felt excluded.

Perhaps he could have written my name in his notebook!

Thank you  Paul for sharing your exclusion encounter. When a teacher call learners by  their names, they feel appreciated and valued. They feel cared for  and  get interested in what we are teaching.

That educator could have done much better than that. The educator had many ways of learning your name. Like doing roll call and highlighting you to respond to questions asked. I would have felt excluded like you had said. As teacher, he or she was not looking and trying to build your self esteem but to tear you down. This is how some of the learners in the modern day class feels when they are not recognized by having an identity in the class, a sense of belonging.

This is a new one Paul. Teacher not learning the name of the learner for sure may reflect lack of interest in the learner and a feeling of exclusion. Yes the teacher could have noted down the name which would demonstrate  interest with the learner.
