1.5. What Does The Wave Model mean to me.

1) It places all children at the center of learning.

Wave 1

All Teachers will use what is available in the mainstream classrooms to improve teaching and learning for all children, including those with disabilities.

Wave 2

All stake holders – parents, teachers, children, ability groups, etc. – will work together to develop an inclusive force which will support targeted children to access learning. This happens together with wave 1 strategies.

The model recognizes that all children who are at risk of being excluded from accessing the mainstream quality teaching can work at and above their peers, but to do so they will need intervention and additional support.

Wave 3

A small amount of children will need specialist support to access the curriculum to reach their true potential.

I appreciate the collaborative, practical and action focused, graduated approach of the wave model.  By concentrating firstly on providing quality education for all, then parallel targeted intervention and specialized services when necessary, quality educational services can be provided in an efficient and coordinated manner.  It does help to overcome many of the perceived barriers to inclusion.
