Many of us at some point have felt excluded be it as a student, at our job, with our friends, or even in our own family. It is because of our uniqueness. We can all related to exclusion therefore, as educators we need to be mindful and embrace our students' uniqueness and don't let them feel or be excluded because of that. Honestly, it is not a nice feeling being excluded from a group or an activity even those that have high self-esteem still feels that disappointment but may react differently as though it does not matter however they use it as a coping mechanism not to be depressed or lower their self-esteem.
At the school I attended many of the students come from a Spanish-speaking home so I had few friends and many times I was not included in conversations or activities during the break because I was unable to speak their language. I felt like I don't belong at that school, nobody loves me, I felt lonely. I grew up that because I don't speak Spanish fluently I cannot be a part of a group of Spanish-speaking people. My friends were just like me which was a few and I created a negative attitude towards the language, Spanish and in high school, my lowest grade was in Spanish. However, eventually, with the assistance of a teacher and other friends, I overcome that, and I can pretty well speak, understand and write the language. However, I needed that support and assistance that is the same with our special educational needs students we need to support them and include them so they become a part of the learning process.
