The Wave Model of Intervention

The Wave Model of Intervention provides a compelling argument for the importance of high quality classroom instruction, for which there is no substitute. Previously, I thought of intervention as progressive steps. However, I love the idea of wave one and two occurring concurrently  so that one provides support for the other and does not replace it.

Due to the pandemic and the shift to online classes there are some of my students who were in danger of being excluded due to a lack of devices or connectivity at home. Although quality instruction was being delivered (Wave 1) they were unable to access it. What was required was a very targeted intervention (Wave 2) to remove this barrier. To solve this problem, the MOE ensured that instruction was available via the radio, television, print media and through packages parents could collect at the school. While I was aware of this before, the material covered this week allowed me to reflect more deeply on how this action is removing barriers to children's access to engaging, high quality learning.
