I have been in the Early childhood level and had the opportunity to teach standard 1 (grade 3). I took the opportunity to reflect on 2 two 'wrong' behaviors. They are -1. Learners always work in silence and 10. The teacher dictates from the textbook.
1. Learners always work in silence.
As a teacher, the only time students will work in silence is when they are doing a final exam. It would be great if while working or copying from the board or PowerPoint students can share ideas with peers. We need to keep in mind that some students cannot stay for a long time sitting without making noise or talking to peers. They can do so once we set rules and consequences in our class for peer sharing working time. Let us bear in mind that students have needs and they are unique.
10. The teacher dictates from a textbook.
Can all students write? Do all students have good listening skills?
It would be of great help if the teacher would summarize the content of the book and if the teacher has a projector project the content in a PowerPoint using pictures, audio, and games such as kahoot game. Dictating from a text frustrates students, especially students who have difficulties with listening. Another approach can be worksheets with the paragraph with pictures to help all students. They will be able to discuss as a class for better understanding. They can take it home to read and reflect and they can draw pictures of their own to describe the paragraph.
