I am the Senior Manager for Recognition of Prior Learning and my favourite characteristic about YXM130 is that it allows you to draw on short courses that you have already completed and use them towards the module. I also love the fact that you can study subjects that interest you whilst also developing skills for further study.

If I was to study this module, I would focus on courses relevant to diet, health and physical activity, an area I am passionate about, so that I can develop greater understanding of how to live a healthy and active lifestyle. I would combine this with courses that focus on children and young people’s mental health and wellbeing so that I can understand ways that I can further support my children as they journey through their childhood and ensure they also lead a healthy, active and fulfilling lifestyle. I would also combine them with courses that relate to psychology so that I can extend my knowledge of the impact the mind can have on our behaviour and start to explore areas of psychology in relation to sport and fitness. As part of my selection, I would seek to include some courses at a higher level to get a feel for what it would be like to study at different levels.

I would consider studying the OpenLearn courses below to help me discover and understand more about the following:

  • Digital skills and practices to develop confidence for life online when you study, work or during everyday life
  • Healthy eating advice and what we should eat before and after exercise
  • The impact of lifestyle on health and wellbeing and the wider determinants of health and ill-health
  • Health attitudes and behaviour and the importance of food in children and young people’s lives
  • Strategies to increase physical activity in children and young people and the impact of screen time on physical activity levels
  • The link between physical activity and mental health and mental health promotion and education
  • The range of factors affecting young people’s mental health and wellbeing and the different strategies that can be used to support children and young people
  • The range of factors which influence the mind and behaviour
  • The term motivation and factors that affect motivation within Sport and Fitness
