Session 1: What is anti-racist coaching?

Introduction

This first session outlines the purpose of the course and the potential benefits of adopting an anti-racist practice in youth sport environments – both for coaches and the children and young people they work with. It will explore how such practice can make people better coaches and help ensure players from all backgrounds can have fun, be themselves and thrive in the sports they love. You will also be introduced to some of the key terminology associated with anti-racist coaching and take a first look at the anti-racist coaching (ARC) model that this course is designed around. Here, it will become apparent why the term anti-racism has been specifically chosen to characterise the practice recommended in the ARC model.

You’ll be introduced to the two coaches who feature across the course – Asad Qureshi (who you have already seen in the course introduction) and Sulayman (Sully) Hafesji-Wade. They will share their own experiences of coaching ethnically diverse young players and pass on their own tips and ideas to help coaches embed aspects of the ARC model into their future practice.
