6 Summary of Session 1

This first session has introduced you to some of the key elements of an anti-racist approach to coaching, noting the important role that youth sport coaches play in the development of children and young people and the influence that the coach and others in supporting roles can have on the experiences of young participants, including those from racially minoritised backgrounds. A coach is likely to support people who are different in all kinds of ways, including diversity associated with ethnicity, culture and religion. While it can be an instinct to want to treat all young people in exactly the same way to ensure fairness and equality, there are multiple reasons why differential treatment and meeting the needs of individuals may be essential in order to ensure players from ethnically diverse backgrounds are able to thrive, enjoy themselves and reach their full sporting potential.
