6 Summary of Session 3
This session has explored the last three principles of the ARC model, all of which focus on influencing others to engage with and adopt anti-racist principles in their own practice. The role of an ARC influencer was introduced, whereby coaches who have become familiar with ARC and started to embed core principle in their own practice can act as critical friends to colleagues around them to help develop their coaching and to constructively review practice they may consider to be potentially discriminatory or exclusionary for some players. You then considered how a coach can help to create an anti-racist consciousness among their young players, encouraging and empowering them to develop their own anti-racist outlooks while also playing their part in creating a welcoming, supportive and thriving environment for their fellow players. Finally, it was considered how ARC can inform the wider organisational culture of a sports club – ensuring that anti-racist values are considered beyond just individual behaviours of coaches, support staff and players but more widely embedded within the club or organisation itself.
