4 Projects: the life cycle, the project manager and success

Once a feasibility study has been undertaken, presented to management and then identified as an area in which a programme of change or one or more projects should be authorised, we should be able to identify the project’s ‘birthday’ and think about the life that lies ahead.

Learning outcomes

At the end of Section 4, you should be able to:

  • describe the basic and extended life cycles that are used for the management of projects
  • describe the product life cycle and understand the potential variation in the processes used for different products
  • list the criteria and factors that are used to promote project success
  • list the main activities and tasks of a project manager.
