In Zambia, like in many other countries in Africa, policies are there for Education for All with tenets for inclusitivity well outlined. However,in practice little seems to have been done in this regard if one compares what is on paper to what has been done so far.The govt through the Ministry of Education is trying but more still remains to be done. Govt priorities for education is construction of schools, every 5km to easen access and increase enrolment, and train more teachers for both the abled and those with disabilities.Additionally, sensitisation of parents, learners, teachers, communities has been given priorities to help neutralise local cultural norms that portrayed negativity towards children born with disabilities. To ensure the education system is inclusive, few among things done by the Zambian govt are:appointment and placement of Standards Officers for Special Education in each district to monitor, supervise and evaluate Special Education Needs in schools, creation of friendly environments in schools and classrooms to cater for interests of learners, adaptation of teaching methods, topics and curriculum to suit individual learners and so on. The measures so far taken have had profound positive impact. Many parents are willing to take children to school, infrastructure and friendly environments have been put in place, and many teachers have the knowledge and skills to deal with mixed learners in their classes and schools.
