Activity 1.3.What do you think would have helped Frederik Haga to be included in education?

Well there were lots of things that might have helped Frederick Haga to be included in education.Firstly the attitude of his peers and teachers at school,if they had been saying encouraging words to Frederick and make him feel included inside the school environment things might be different for him.But see how they responsed "he should go home".They really excluded him.If teachers knew varieties of strategies to support  Frederick it will give him more comfort. Not only if there were education policies to students  with difficulties like him in that time.Supporting through Braille and audio materials or teachers have to provide activities.People should be stopped from negative views to Frederick.

What helped Haga?

The most important thing that helped Haga was Government Policy which encouraged and supported return to school for  all children including those with disabilities. NGOs capitalised on the policy by coming up with projects that supported people with disabilities go to school and job training. In the absence of the enabling policy like Kenya had, Haga would not be where he is now, Director of Special Needs Education. Government showed its seriousness by implementing the policy much to the benefit of Haga and others.

I agree Ignatius. It is important to have good policies in place - but they need to be implemented. NGOs do a great deal of good work in this respect. What more could Governments do?

Good points here, Senolina. Thank you. Have you seen any examples of people like Fredrik being included in school? What strategies did classroom teachers use?

I think it would have been important if specialist education for Fredrick. This would probably come to play if there was a policy in place to support learners in need of special education. Implementation is however as important as having the polices. If the teachers were well equipped with the knowledge and skill of handling a child in need of special education then it would be of help for Fredrick. If the school administration followed through to know where and why Fredrick was missing school then they could have helped him too. So recognizing that Fredrick needed help and administering the help would have been of great help. Training and data collection as well as government support in assisting in acquiring teaching aids and follow up would help at a broader perceptive. .
