Activity 2.3 Where are you on the line? – Oluwafunmilayo Olalusi

I am talking as a student

Extrinsic learner motivation                             Intrinsic learner motivation

I am more motivated having worked examples to guide me on any topic. I n that case, I can sit down for hours learning to understand the topic and that gives me some satisfaction.

Teacher is the expert – main authority        Teacher as facilitator of learning

While teacher is expected to be an (not the) expert because what you don’t know you can’t teach, I enjoyed a class where the teacher took me step by step through a course, over and over again until I got the message. This is a type of learner-centred teaching because it is slow, but result-oriented.

Syllabus presented as decontextualised      Syllabus reflects lives of learners

The syllabus usually is not prepared with the learners’ input. Hence, it is decontextulaised

Learning as an individual cognitive activity Learning as a social activity

Learning is both individualistic because a student needs some to meditate on what he/she has been taught and digest the contents; and a social activity because I learnt more and retained knowledge better when I discussed the subject with colleagues.

Relationships based on authority       Relationships based on mutual respect

While the teacher is ‘superior’ to the student, any teacher that related to me like someone of substance gained my respect and that till today.

Intelligence is fixed at birth                  Everyone can learn given the right support

No child is born a dummy. The environment where I went to school contributed positively to my learning experience

I agree with you fully, that everyone can learn and is intelligent.
