Activity 3.3 Involving All in Action

Activity 3.3  Involving All in Action

Examples for these three principles in action, or any other ways in which the teacher involves all students - from Video Clip of Lower Primary Mathematics Multigrade Class

Observant

At the of the lesson, the teacher identifies those who are struggling with understanding the lesson and assigns helpers from among other student – peer support.

With a new topic, the teacher starts with the weak students and then move to the stronger ones

Flexible

The teacher encouraged older students to work in groups while attending to younger students.

The teacher used home languages – three types - for younger students to aid their understanding.

When the teacher is confused about what a student has said, he asks other students to explain to him the teacher.

Raising self esteem

The teacher encourages the students to work together, creating a collaborative atmosphere and thereby not leaving any behind

The teacher breaks tasks into smaller activities and allow students to help one another

The teacher helps the students to learn by heart

Activity 3. 3 Involving all

I have like the idea of using three languages to support learning of the concept being taught. This means all learners were put on board. The use of three languages shows how flexible the teacher is.

Yes indeed, Fatima. The teacher was so flexible that she allowed use of local language when teaching English and the teacher even acknowledged.

Yes, I also found it very interesting the fact that it brings together the different languages in the teaching practice. I think it is a way to make all students feel welcome. Flexibility is also shown by feeling that the teacher also learns from his or her students.

I was impressed that the teacher could easily code switch by using three different languages to deliver the lesson in order to assist learners' outcome. Teacher should be commended for being creative.

Yes Olalusi, well covered points. I also notice that the primary school teacher is enthusiastic with enthusiastic learners and his voice is he is heard severally saying, 'very good' raising learners self esteem. When he is in the other room the children continue working, helping one another.
