Activity 3.8 Supporting learners with specific needs in a mainstream classroom

Activity 3.8 Supporting learners with specific needs in a mainstream classroom

Two ways in which a learner with hearing impairment could be supported in a normal classroom

Teacher could sit the learner in front for eye-to-eye contact with the teacher, and then use a range of communication medium – e.g., sign language, communication board

Teacher ensures the desk is tidy to avoid distracting the learner. Teacher could use peer support by allowing the learner child to copy his/her peers

The learner's siting position should considered, it should be the first row in the class for close contact. People with hearing impairment sometimes read the lips of others as they talk. The teacher could also use symbolic communication tools.
