Reflections on week 3

Thank you all for your great contributions to the week 3  forum.

From your discussions, the following points are revealed:

1.Active teaching approaches to any cadre of learners involves having a variety of well-planned activities that offer learners wider choices of engagement depending on their unique abilities and needs.

2.Large classes, poor learning behavior, special learning difficulties, and difficult home environments constitute major inclusivity challenges in education.

3. Every teacher has or will at any one particular time encounter learners with special needs in the mainstream classroom. Consequently, the teacher needs to be observant and keen to identify such learners, and be flexible in changing his /her teaching styles and approaches to accommodate the concerned learners and raise their self-esteem.

4.The most difficult aspects of active teaching to define are critical thinking and assessment of learners’ levels of engagement.

Welcome now to week 4 Forum

Week 3 Summary

Well done summary of week 3 Ngatia.  It was very educative especially on the issue of the need of a teacher to be observant and flexible in order to support every learner according to their needs. I can only say I didn't know but now I know the 3 principles of inclusivity.

Thank you Florence. From the discussions, I was also able to note that the inclusivity challenges in education are not limited just to one locality but are global. I was able to identify with challenges experienced by other teachers in other parts of the world. There is therefore need for collaborations among educators to help one another through discussions to overcome the challenges. Definitely, there's  a lot we can learn from each other.

Yes Florence and David, we looked into an active classroom: inclusive teacher is a facilitator of  friendly free learning and  learns too. There is still more about active classroom.

Yes David, we saw that inclusivity is about everybody and not just persons living with disabilities. Many of us felt excluded because we faced challenges in logging in to this programme

You are right Florence. The first thing that come to one's mind when he/ she hears about inclusive education is how to accommodate learners with physical or mental disabilities in the mainstream classrooms. This is just but partly true considering that there is a whole range of  issues that may exclude learners in education like difficult home lives ,shyness, new environment etc. The study of this course opens one's eyes to these forms of exclusivity and how they can be overcome.

I agree with you David on your sentiments about Inclusive Teaching and Learning especially when some think that inclusive education is about for those who have pronounced disabilities while we overlook those with hidden problems that can result in them being excluded from effective learning. The study of this course has opened my eyes to these forms of exclusivity and how they can be overcome. I am one of those victims as a lecturer of excluding some of the learners with hidden issues.

Thank you Matthew for you honest sharing. To say the truth, all of us have been victims  in excluding learners in one way or the other. Courtesy of the designers of this course, we are now able to change our attitude and ensure Inclusivity of ALL. We need to preach this gospel to all!

I was also one of those who felt inclusive education is about those with physical disabilities. But now I know it is about including everyone and leaving out no-one.
