2.1 Education Policy - Tonga

In Tonga ,our Government under the Ministry of Education and Training acknowledge and implement Inclusive Education in the system for all Government primary schools to Colleges .

We do have a I.E policy that was developed in 2008.It needs reviewing. This year there has been discussion to review. Due to the I.E policy a Special Need and disability classroom has been founded .However this one  Special Need classroom  does not cater the increasing number of students who enrol each year. Also there is need for a increase of trained  qualified teachers too and facilities to cater these Special needs and disabilities  due to the increase number of enrolment each year, for example this year there are 30 students for 3 teachers only.

Although there is a Inclusive Education Policy (IE) and we do have a IE Unit in our  Education system ,which I joined in this year for the first time I believe if the IE policy will be fully implemented by ALL teachers not just the IE Unit it will surely improve learning for ALL.

Other challenges are the need of more trained special need teachers, teaching practise to be Inclusive and learner centre. The need to be more consistent in the monitoring for the  Inclusive practises in the classroom carried out by the teachers. I believe our Tongan Government should support to by provide 5 scholarships  each year for I.E Also should allocate 10% of its budget for IE in the system to improve and achieve quality inclusive education in all levels .Furthermore I believe the main challenge is how often do we practise and deliver this Policy for our Inclusive learners
