Low teacher capacity I see as a challenge and not understanding Learner Centre Education principles to be practise in the classroom.
Here in Tonga our current syllabus focus is on student centre. This is a shift from teacher centre. Like explained this week discussion Chalk and talk .The teacher is more in charge.
While I was still in our Primary Unit (2019 - 2020)as a an Education Officer during my classroom visits ,I would still see some teachers still practising teacher centre although if she/he had group the students into small groups
This shift to student centre is very similar to Learner Centre Education. Therefore more training and in-service training where provided to the teachers through Literacy projects Like LALI ACCENT and now TESA to build the capacity of the teachers here in Tonga to be able focus on the child's needs an interest. Also demonstrating to the teachers to create activities where the students are more engaged instead of the teacher talking most of the time. Develop and create activities based on the capability of the child because each child learns differently.
With all these literacy supports provided to the teachers through half days workshops ,it helped the teachers to build their capacity by been more positive about the shift from chalk to talk by formatively accessing the students daily in the various activities where engaged daily instead of waiting for a test at the end of the week or end of the month.
With this type of support provided by the Ministry it helped teachers to create resources that was available and search on the internet free resources to support their lessons. It built more confidence amongst the teachers which I see would be similar with learner Centre Education was implemented in Tonga.
