3. Observing active teaching: Supportive learning environment

There is something peculiar that goes on in a some primary schools. This is more so in private ones, where good performance is a selling point for the school:

Self esteem injured

a. If a learner performs poorly in a certain subject, he/she is caned by the teacher in front of the whole class while the high performers are applauded.

b. The language used by some teachers hurts learners in various ways. Below is a case of a boy who had a learning environment that was not supportive. The name is altered to hide his identity :

Menti was born with a distinctive stammer and this worsened whenever he was under any form of stress.During his primary school days, his teacher used to invite him to the front of the class to present something. When he tried to construct the answers, the teacher made fun of him by telling him that he spoke like someone with ashes in his mouth. This discouraged Menti to the extent that he wanted to quit school. It took the encouragement of his family and friends to stay in school. He went on to graduate form the university with his dream course. He is also a talented singer with no traces of the stammer when he speaks.
