Activity 3.8 Supporting learners with specific needs in a mainstream classroom

Dear Colleagues,

This learner displayed much of a disruptive behaviour (screaming and throwing tantrums) when class routines were interrupted, and this, was regardless of the validity for the interruptions.

For example:

If the student arrived late for school and assembly was in progress, it was very difficult for him to have a meaningful part in the assembly, since the daily routine entailed having entered the compound on mornings; students were given their breakfast time before the assembly. Many a times the student had to be taken away from the assembly and allowed to have his meal in his classroom. In helping the student’s parents to understand this dilemma, much effort had to be made on their part to maintain early arrival of the student. On occasions when the parents informed me of any late arrival or if the delivery of the breakfast was late, all will eat their meal after the assembly, however, the student had to be constantly ensured during the assembly, that breakfast will be served after the assembly since he would repeatedly ask: ‘We having breakfast now?’ and the Principal being aware of the student’s impatience/limitation to wait, the entire morning assembly would be shortened.
