Part 2 - Activity 4

The two steps the tutor can take to get the students back on track with their studies are:

  • Encouraging students
  • Individualising the learning experience and making it personal

I agree with Wend that encouraging students would be an important step and I would also add facilitating the development of skills as another step to help the struggling new students with their module.

  • Encouraging students
  • Being flexible and responsive to the needs of students
Within those I would try to identify the next steps in learning and facilitate the development of learning skills

Fully agree Skye, flexibility would also be of a huge advantage where possible.

I agree with everyone else in terms of encouragement. It's about two way communication and seeing where and how you as a tutor can look to steer the student back on course. effective questioning and listening are prevalent at this stage.

I'd also encourage the student to engage as much as possible with fellow students and peers to gain an understanding of where they are at and if any 'top tips' could be learned and implemented from them.

Thanks

I too was thinking along the lines of pairing up, or grouping, experienced OU students with those not so familiar with the process. Maybe one or two study skills activities to carry out in groups on discussion forums or breakout rooms.

Encourage the students, chat to them, ask how they're getting on and if they need help with any topics. Possibly some group work at the next tutorial but some intervention is needed before then - a phone call would be best or possibly an email but a conversation would be better.

Completely agree with Wend, the most relevant and supportive measure is to make it personal for feeling them important and encourage to move forward.

  • Being flexible and responsive to the needs of students
  • Encouraging students

Are the 2 main points i would suggest are needed. Maybe a phone call to each student would be wise to identify the individuals needs.
