ResearchGate is free to join. Its Questions section allows crowdsourcing of scientific research problems. I've found it especially useful for troubleshooting lab-based experimental problems, e.g. Western Blots. It is helpful to get advice from labs around the world who all have slightly different protocol tweaks and techniques.
