6 Hanuma Vannama | The Monkey

View
This Vannama is the recital of the Monkey in which the dancers imitates the actions of a monkey. The Monkey God masquerade, The Hanuman has been a dance of imitations in parts of South Travancore where the wondering homeless (Pandaram) was in the habit of going on his rounds with a mask of Hanuman.  When he approaches a house, he would put on the mask and perofrm the frolics of Hanuman, enacting the scenes from the well known tale – Ramayana.  In the actions of this vannama, the monkey jumps, sways from tree to tree with wrinkled face and eyes sticking out, scrutinizing anyone passing by.This is a rarely played vannama today, though it is one of the first vannam a dancer would learn under the Kandyan style.
