The OU does its best to ensure that we’re accessible for our staff and students, not only because it’s the right thing to do and it's expected by students and staff, but also because we have to by law.

Here are some laws about accessibility around the world:

European Accessibility Act (EAA)

Passed in 2019, the EAA aims to make everyday products and services like ATMs, phones, and websites usable for everyone, regardless of disability. It encourages European businesses to design inclusively from the start. By 2025, the requirements of the European Accessibility Act must have been implemented.

Rehabilitation Act

Passed in 1973, Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act ensures USA government websites and technology are accessible for people with disabilities. It requires things like screen reader compatibility and clear website design, helping everyone access information and services.

The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA)

IDEA started in 1975 to ensure all students, regardless of disability, get a free and appropriate public education. It requires schools to consider each child's needs and provide them with extra help or special services to succeed in schools in the USA.

The EU Web Accessibility Directive (WAD)

The directive on the accessibility of websites and mobile applications of public sector bodies, also known as the Web Accessibility Directive, launched in 2016 in the European Union (EU), aims to make websites and mobile apps of public sector bodies more user-friendly for people with disabilities.

The Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) Accessibility Regulations 2018

Passed in 2018, the UK law made all public sector websites and mobile apps accessible for people with disabilities. This means features like screen reader compatibility and clear layouts are required to ensure everyone can access government services online.
