Sorley MacLean (1911-1996) is regarded as one of the greatest Scottish poets of the twentieth century. This free course, The poetry of Sorley MacLean, will introduce you to his poetry and give you an insight into the cultural, historical and political contexts that inform his work. MacLean wrote in Gaelic and the importance of the language to his work is also examined.
Course learning outcomes
After studying this course, you should be able to:
understand the power of MacLean's poetry in its original Gaelic
give examples of how such poetry engages with historical and cultural change.
The course was hugely enjoyable. It does a good job of showing how Sorley MacLean's poetry works within and against the Gaelic Poetry tradition. It was a joy to have recordings of Sorley in conversation with Iain Critchton Smith. I wish there was further information about the recording and where to find the complete interview.
The only downsides were there were some typos in the Gaelic and in English. It seems like this is from some of the poems being scanned in and the computer making mistakes more than anything. But they would be easy mistakes to fix. It also would have been nice to have a more complete reference list to the articles mentioned in the text.
Overall though a wonderful course. I would love more long or short courses on Scottish (or Welsh!) literature. Scotland in particular is a poetry powerhouse.
