8 Develop and iterate your design
Consider this section to be your wallpaper studio, where you will produce your final design concept. The studio brings together the tile and pattern maker programs on one page to make it easier to design in a modular way across the tile and pattern levels.
You should work by moving between the tile and pattern maker programs. When you have created a tile, copy and paste the tile code into the relevant tile function inside the pattern maker. Moving backwards and forwards between the two programs will help you to iterate your design concept.
Note: the tile maker is preloaded with a default tile code, allowing you to tweak the vertex values. The pattern maker is blank for you to paste the tile code for your designs.
Design guidance
Here are a few things to think about as you experiment and iterate your wallpaper concept design:
Create alternative designs. This will give you a chance to experiment without being too precious about your ideas. It will help you to come up with a better final design than if you were to focus on a single design.
Make the wallpaper relate to its location. Remember that you are designing your pattern for a specific place in your home.
Consider symmetry. Think about reflecting, rotating, or inverting your tiles to create patterns.
Experiment with colour and line thickness. Controlling the fill(), stroke() and background colours as well as the strokeWeight() or noStroke() commands can have a dramatic impact on your design.
Use modularity. Think about both the design of the individual tiles and the overall pattern when connected together in the rosette shape.
Experiment with the tileSequence. Try changing the order of tiles as well as randomising the sequence when creating a pattern.
Pick which tileSize shows off your pattern in the best way. A large tileSize works best for bold patterns, while a small tileSize can help highlight random patterns.
Consider the printer that you will use to print the design. If you only have a black-and-white printer, it might be best to focus on a greyscale pattern design.
Activity 14 Design your wallpaper
- Use the two programs on this page to make your wallpaper design.
- Make use of the design guidance above.
- Create several different designs so you can choose the one that works best when viewed in the context of your space.
