Welcome to the ORION MOOC 2.0 for Open Science in the Life Sciences!
What is this course about?
This course is an introduction to Open Science principles in biomedicine, life sciences and other related research fields. It is intended to help scientists to share their research with the world more effectively.
Who is this course for?
This course is for researchers in biomedicine, life sciences and related research fields interested in Open Science practices.
What can you learn?
In
the following 6 modules you will get an introduction to a variety of useful tools and research practices, as well as Open Science
principles and workflows along the research cycle in biomedicine and
life sciences.
Please note this course is now a standalone self-paced course that will not be moderated. In order to gain a completion certificate all the modules and activities must be completed.

Open Science is about putting more science in society and more society in science.
It is based on the principles of
accessibility, transparency, and collaboration. It incorporates topics such as
Open Access publishing, responsibly sharing data and analysis, and engaging with the public about science. It is also about improving research practices so researchers can benefit from more effective workflows. The aim of the ORION
project is to explore and promote Open Science practices which improve the
quality of research. Open Science is
beneficial, practical, and simple for researchers.
This video gives an overview
of how Open Science fits into and helps a researcher’s workflow.
This module you will learn about the differences and opportunities in sharing your research
between conventional publishing and open science publishing methods. Find out what you can learn this week in the hotspots!

This module's assignments
In
these small assignments you can try out in practice what
you have learned this module! You will also find direct links to these activities within this module's lessons.
Think
about your own experiences with publishing and accessing scholarly literature.
Share your thoughts, questions, or experiences with your peers on the forum.
Have you ever preregistered a study or have you considered doing so? If yes, why and what's your experience? If no, what's holding you back? Discuss with your peers in the forum!

This module's assignments
This is an overview of your module assignments. You will also find direct links to these activities within this module's lessons where your activity completion is tracked automatically.
If you
think or your own research, what kinds of data do you produce and what
are some of the challenges and opportunities with these types of data?
What ethical issues might such data raise? How could other researchers
benefit from it if it was accessible? Share your thoughts and experiences
and discuss with your peers in this module's forum!
In this week's forum discussion,
we want you to think about some concerns you have or that you heard from
other researchers about making data open or FAIR.
You can't get enough and want to learn more about FAIR and reproducible data science? Here is a Webinar on how to use the Open Science Framework that helps you to make all your research steps open, collaborative and reproducible. Or check out this community handbook published by The Turing Way.
