Welcome
This badged open course (BOC) is intended for STEM industry professionals or researchers with expertise in computing and communications technologies who are interested in finding out more about the role of a tutor (Associate Lecturer) for the School of Computing and Communications in the Open University’s Faculty of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.
Over the 6 hours of study you will learn about the Open University's model of distance teaching, specific information about how the School of Computing and Communications delivers its curriculum, and practical information about the tutor role. You will also hear from a diverse range of existing OU tutors who share their own experiences of working in the STEM Faculty.
The role of Associate Lecturer at The Open University is very different from similar roles at other higher education institutions. We see many applications that could do more to identify the strengths of candidates and enable the application to progress to interview.
We hope that this course, written by academics who recruit new Associate Lecturers in Computing and Communications at the OU, raises awareness of the role and means that we can reach more potential applicants. It gives an insight into how teaching happens at the OU and how you could be involved.
If you do decide to progress an application, you can take what you have learned from the course and use it to strengthen your application with appropriate examples that draw on your experience and passion to support students.
There is a digital badge awarded for successful completion of the course and you will also receive a Statement of Participation. You can include both of these as part of your application.
