Predictive Analytics in Nursing Education

The ATI TEAS (Test of Essential Academic Skills) is a standardized pre-admission examination designed to assess a student's overall academic preparedness for health science programs, including baccalaureate nursing programs . It measures essential academic skills across four content domains: reading, mathematics, English, and science . The primary purpose of the ATI TEAS is to help nursing programs identify students who are at risk of academic failure and to predict academic success within these programs, as well as success on the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN) . Research indicates that all components of the TEAS exam (English, reading, mathematics, and science) are correlated with academic success in baccalaureate nursing students . This suggests that using the ATI TEAS as part of the admission criteria can increase the probability of student success and help identify students who may benefit from remediation . The ATI TEAS exam consists of 170 multiple-choice questions, and examinees are allotted a total of 209 minutes to complete it . The validity and reliability of the ATI TEAS have been well-documented . While other standardized tests like the HESI exit exam and the ATI Comprehensive Predictor are also used to predict NCLEX-RN success, no single assessment tool has been definitively proven superior to others in predicting academic or NCLEX-RN success . The significance of the ATI TEAS stems from the critical need to address the projected nursing shortage in the United States, driven by an aging population and increasing prevalence of chronic diseases . Factors contributing to this shortage include an aging nursing workforce, limited nursing faculty, and students failing to graduate or pass the NCLEX-RN on their first attempt . By identifying students with strong foundational academic skills, the ATI TEAS aims to improve retention rates in nursing programs and ultimately contribute to a more robust nursing workforce . In a retrospective, correlational study involving 835 baccalaureate nursing students, it was found that students who graduated on time and passed the NCLEX-RN on their first attempt had significantly higher ATI TEAS scores in composite, mathematics, reading, and science sections compared to those who did not meet these criteria . This research highlights the predictive value of the ATI TEAS in forecasting academic success in nursing education.
