This week we will think about the principles and practice of Social and Emotional Learning (SEL). We will invite you to design a learning activity for creating a supportive learning environment that will also help you manage your classroom. You will then have an opportunity to share the learning activity with your peers and review what others have shared. By the end of the week you should have gained a lot of great teaching ideas to put into practice!

Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) builds on the insights from weeks 1 and 2. In week 1, we talked about how the learning environment includes both the physical environment and the social and emotional environment. We used the six learning types from the Conversational Framework to start designing learning activities.

In week 2, the Ecological Systems Theory helped us consider how the learner may be affected by wider society. We thought of ways to creatively design our classroom activities to take this into account. We also learnt about the complex relationship between education and the effects of conflict and mass displacement. This helped us reflect on the context of conflict and displacement within which teaching and learning takes place.

Learning outcomes

In week 3 we focus on these learning outcomes:

  • Practice and promote inclusive approaches to teaching;
  • Apply relevant theories to support teaching practice (Social and Emotional Learning Theory); and
  • Collaborate and share effective educational practices and experiences using digital tools and platforms.

Over to you

As we enter week 3, we are wondering if you have had a chance to put any of the ideas from weeks 1 and 2 into practice in your learning and teaching environment. If you did, what happened? If not, what are your plans for implementing the ideas? Please share your experiences in the forum below.
