There are various ways I create a balanced learning experience in my classroom. One of my preferred approaches is to focus deeply on a single topic to ensure students fully understand it. For example, when teaching about natural and man-made disasters, I first help students understand the key concepts and different types of disasters.
After that, I divide the class into two groups and introduce a discussion topic: if you are helping people affected by a disaster, is it better to donate food and water or to donate money? Students are given time to research and discuss in their groups, followed by a structured debate where each student speaks for about two minutes.
This approach encourages students to research more and think critically about the topic. It also allows them to express their own opinions and develop creativity. I have noticed that even quieter students become more engaged and willing to participate during these activities.
Overall, this method improves students’ speaking skills, teamwork, and confidence in sharing their ideas.
