Creating supportive learning environments

One idea from the resource that really stands out is the use of consistent opening and closing routines. When you have students from different backgrounds and education levels, they all arrive with different levels of stress. Starting every single day with the same "check-in" or a quick ice-breaker game like the ones Jue Mo Htoo Paw and Rose Mary used creates a "reset button." It tells the students, "No matter what happened outside, you are safe and equal here now."

I also found that peer-mentoring routines are a lifesaver for multilevel classes. Instead of the stronger students getting bored, I turned them into "student leaders." I created a routine where, after the main lesson, the advanced students would help explain the concept to their peers who were struggling. This didn't just solve the "boredom" problem; it built a lot of respect between different ethnic and age groups.

Using these routines made my job much less exhausting. Once the students knew exactly what was expected of them during transitions, I didn't have to spend as much energy on classroom management and could focus more on that one-on-one support they needed.
