Theory in practice

Bronfenbrenner’s Ecological Systems Theory helps teachers understand that children’s learning and wellbeing are shaped by many layers of influence, especially in contexts of conflict and displacement.

At the microsystem level, family stress, fear, and classroom relationships directly affect students. The mesosystem shows how weak or strong connections between home and school can change learning outcomes.

The exosystem highlights outside forces like government policies, refugee camp rules, or parents’ jobs that indirectly impact children. The macrosystem reminds teachers of the role of culture, traditions, and social values in shaping opportunities.

The chronosystem emphasizes how life changes over time such as moving, trauma, or conflict after development. Finally, the techno subsystem shows how access to technology can either support or limit education.
