How Teachers Can Create Safe Spaces

Teachers play an important role in creating safe spaces in education, especially in conflict and crisis contexts. Since teachers interact with students every day, they become the main facilitators of learning and also people that students trust. Through respectful teaching, open discussions, and fair treatment, teachers can create classrooms where students feel safe to express themselves and learn. In many migrant or crisis settings, schools are one of the few stable environments for young people, so teachers also act as mentors and role models who support students not only academically but also emotionally.

In my community, my school MHEP follows the guidelines set by MECC schools, along with additional core values and principles developed by the MHEP management team to ensure that the school remains a safe space for students, teachers, and the surrounding community. These guidelines include legal assistance and declarations that schools remain protected spaces, peace education training, and one-on-one well-being or counseling sessions to support students’ mental health.

I believe the best way to advocate for safe schools is through representation and support. Schools that successfully create safe learning environments should act as models for others. They can share their experiences through networking, workshops, student exchanges, and collaborative activities with other schools, especially those in more remote areas. By raising awareness, sharing knowledge, and strengthening connections between educators and communities, schools can work together to improve safety and protection for both learners and teachers.
