Theory in practice
In what ways could the theory help teachers to understand how different system level factors affect their students’ learning and wellbeing in contexts of conflict and displacement?
Bronfenbrenner's theory helps teachers understand that students' learning and wellbeing are influenced by multiple layers of their environment, not just for what happens in the classroom. This is especially important in contexts of conflict and displacement, where students often face complex issues.
1.Microsystem ( teachers can recognize that students may be affected by immediate experiences such as family separation, trauma from relationship, or lack of stability). Understanding this help me a lot to show empathy, to create a safe classroom envrionment , and to provide emotional support.
2. Mesosystem ( the importance of relationships between home and school or teachers and parents ) In situations or displacement, communication or collaboration between educators and guardian may be limited or difficult. But, teachers can try to build trust and maintain strong connections with students' parents to better support them.
3. Exosystem (external factors such as parents' job loss or hard-living condition in refugee camp ) these outside factors can affect students indirectly. By understanding this, teachers can adjust situation, be more flexible, and connect students with available support systems.
4. Macrosystem ( cultural values, social norms, and political situations ) shape students' experiences. Teachers have to become more culturally sensitive, respect students' backgrounds, and help them feel valued.
5. Chronosystem ( experiences change over time ) esp during conflict or displacement. Past trauma or recent changes can continue to affect students' behavior and learning. Therefore, teachers are the main characters to support students by being patient and consistent.
6. Technosystem ( the role of digital tools in learning ) Tech provide access to education when traditional schooling is disrupted. Thus, by considering this situations, teachers have to use digital platforms to support students' learning and maintain them continuity.
How could this theory help you to help your own students?
This theory help me see students being shaped by many factors. With the knowledge and skill I have gotten, I would create a supportive and inclusive classroom, be flexible with my teaching methods, and pay attentions to their emotional as well as academic needs. Furthermore, I would also try to build strong relationships with their guardians and would use tech to support learning where possible.
