Theory in practice

Bronfenbrenner’s Ecological Systems Theory helps teachers understand that students’ learning and well-being are influenced by many factors beyond the classroom, especially in contexts of conflict and displacement. It shows that challenges like family stress, displacement, cultural beliefs, and lack of resources all affect how students behave and learn. By thinking about these different system levels, teachers can better understand why a student may struggle and respond with more empathy and appropriate support. In my own teaching, this theory can help me build stronger relationships with students (microsystem), communicate more with families (mesosystem), and be aware of wider issues like policies or access to education (exosystem). It also reminds me to consider students’ life experiences and changes over time, and how access to technology affects learning. Overall, this helps me support my students more effectively, not just academically but also emotionally.
