The Urie Bronfenbrenner Ecological Systems Theory helps teachers understand that students’ learning is not only affected by what happens in the classroom. Many other things outside school can influence them, especially in places affected by conflict and displacement.
For example, students may face problems at home such as financial struggles, family stress, moving between places, or lack of study resources. These factors can affect their concentration, motivation, and wellbeing. The theory helps teachers realize that when a student struggles in class, it may not mean they are lazy or careless. There could be many outside reasons.
For my own students, this idea reminds me to understand their situations before judging them. I can try to communicate with their families, support students who face difficulties, and be more flexible with their learning needs.
Of course, teachers cannot solve every problem students face outside school. But this theory helps teachers be more understanding and supportive, so students feel safer and more encouraged to learn.
