for my volunteer experience, before the lesson start, i used to ask question related to the topic, by doing this i can know how much they are familiar with the topic so that I can change the lesson plan based on their answer. In the middle of the lesson I let them ask questions to me, so that i can know they completely get the lessson i want to give. After the lesson I ask questions. If they answer 80% correct I could say that they got what I want to give.
