One activity that I would like to use to create a safe and emotionally supportive learning environment is a game called “Hot Potato with a Spinning Wheel.” I believe this activity is especially useful at the beginning of each school term, when students are still getting to know each other and may feel shy or unsure.

In this activity, students sit in a circle while music is played. They pass an object around, and when the music stops, the student holding the object must answer a question from the spinning wheel. This simple structure creates a relaxed and engaging atmosphere. It allows students to participate without too much pressure, while still encouraging them to speak and share.

One important advantage of this activity is that the teacher has control over the questions on the spinning wheel. This means the teacher can carefully choose questions that are safe, friendly, and not too personal. At the beginning of the term, the questions can focus on simple topics such as hobbies, favorite foods, or positive memories. This helps students feel comfortable and gradually build trust with their classmates.

As the term progresses, the same activity can be used again, but with more reflective questions. For example, in the second or third term, questions can include: How was your last term? What did you enjoy? What challenges did you face? What can we improve? These types of questions encourage students to think more deeply about their learning and behavior.

This activity is valuable because it supports both emotional connection and reflection. Students learn to listen to each other, understand different perspectives, and express themselves in a safe space. At the same time, teachers can gain insight into students’ feelings and experiences.
