This week helped me understand how important social and emotional learning is in the classroom. Students do not only come to school to learn academic subjects; they also bring their emotions, experiences, and sometimes difficult situations from their family or community. As teachers, we need to understand these challenges and create a safe and supportive learning environment.
One important idea I learned is the value of listening to students. When teachers allow students to share their thoughts, feelings, and experiences, it helps them feel respected and understood. This can build trust between the teacher and students and make learning more meaningful.
I also learned that teachers can create safe spaces where students feel comfortable expressing themselves and developing confidence. Even small activities, such as discussions, reflection time, or emotional check-ins, can make a big difference.
Overall, this week reminded me that teaching is not only about delivering knowledge, but also about supporting students emotionally and helping them grow as individuals. This is especially important in communities that have experienced conflict, displacement, or other challenges.
This course has encouraged me to think more carefully about how I can create a positive and supportive learning environment for my students.
