This week helped me understand how important social and emotional learning (SEL) is in teaching. I learned that students are not only learners, but they also have feelings, challenges, and personal experiences that affect how they learn.

One important thing I learned is the value of listening to students and giving them a safe space to express themselves. This can help them feel supported and more confident in the classroom. I also realized that even simple activities can make a big difference in creating a positive learning environment.

Throughout the course, I have started to think more carefully about my role as a teacher, not only to teach knowledge but also to support students’ wellbeing. Even in difficult situations, teachers can still create a caring and inclusive classroom.

One question I have is: how can teachers better support students who have experienced trauma without having professional counselling training?
