Reflecting on weeks 1 and 2, I realized that my role as a teacher who teaches Math is about much more than just explaining math equations. The Ecological Systems Theory helped me see that my students carry the stress of their wider exosystem like displacement and family struggles into the classroom every day. I now understand that if I don’t create a safe microsystem, the school can accidentally become a perpetrator by ignoring their trauma. To fix this, I am planning to start using more visual drawings and simple English to break down complex topics, which helps students who feel like victims of the language barrier gain confidence.
