Supporting your learners

  • What strategies, if any, have you tried using to help your learners develop the five core competencies of Social Emotional Learning? What successes and challenges have you had with these strategies?

One strategy I try was divide the learners into three group and give each group a song to make role play for competition. This activity help them to practice relationship skills because they need to work together, and also build social awareness when they listen to each other ideas. The success was students feel more closer to the activities, they communicate better and enjoy teamwork. The challenge was some learners not manage disagreement well or feel shy to share. we assign one teacher in each group to look after the team and give them support when they need it. In the end all of the group perform their role play well and we award them with some of the snack as a reward.

  • Do you think you could use any of the lesson plans or SEL games from the International Rescue Committee resources in your teaching? If so, which ones, and why do you think they would work in your context?Yes, I see SEL games from the international Rescue Committee is very resourceful and helpful for me as a teacher. The IRC provide the game instructions clearly which make the teacher easy to use back in the school during teaching. Some of the game like Zing Zang Zaing for example is very interesting and suitable for children in promoting SEL without telling students.
