I think offering basic counselling support can be part of a teacher’s role, especially in difficult contexts where professional counsellors are not available, but it should not replace specialist support. Teachers can use simple skills like listening, showing empathy, and asking questions to help students express their feelings, as shown by teachers at Marist Asia Foundation. However, there are risks, such as not having enough training to handle serious emotional issues or becoming overwhelmed. In my context, schools may not have professional counselling services, so teachers need more training and guidance in basic counselling skills and also support from external organizations when needed. This would help ensure that students receive the right care while teachers are also supported.
